Man-Made Coral Reef Sculptures

Max Hooper Schneider's New Art Was Created in Partnership With BMW

Los Angeles-based artist Max Hooper Schneider showcased his latest project "Planetary Vitrine: The Reef as Event" at Miami Art Basel 2017 earlier this month, in an ongoing partnership with BMW.

Teaming up with international artists, BMW's Art Journey is an annual competition and initiative aiming to give emerging talents a platform to showcase their work and vision. After being named the winner of last year's Art Journey, Max Hooper Schneider had the honor of showcasing his latest work during this year's Miami 2017 Art Basel event. His latest project consists of a series of captivating sculptures, intricately crafted to depict man-made coral reefs that evoke an air of surrealism. His inspiration came from his BMW Art Journey travels earlier this year, where he focused on coral reefs from around the globe, while noting the many complexities that contribute to their mystical beauty.

While some of Hooper Schneider's creations mimic multicolored underwater foliage, others appear muted and consist of discarded objects like footwear. Max Hooper Schneider’s Art Journey is described as "a maritime exploration of coral reefs around the globe with specific focus on Indo-West Pacific regions, where the majority of the planet’s corals are found, along with those from Russia and East Africa."
