Martin Duplantier Architects, a French studio, has recently won a competition to design a series of bridges and pavilions in China. The competition was put on by ZTG, a Chinese tour company, and it will result in three footbridges being built in a national park and world heritage site in Zhangjiajie, a province in western China.
Martin Duplantier Architects' winning designs all revolve around the concept of illusion. The three footbridges are all made from glass and mirrors, and each one gives a different experience for those walking over them. One consists entirely of a mirror that reflects the valley below, another is a glass covering that lets people feel as though they're walking on air, and the third is a cantilevered platform that reaches out over the edge of a cliff.
