Brooklyn's East River Park is now Dedicated to Marsha P. Johnson

The legacy of gay liberation activist Marsha P. Johnson is being permanently recognized after New York's governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted to announce that Brooklyn's East River Park will be renamed the Marsha P Johnson State Park.

As an outspoken transgender and gay rights activist, the self-identified drag queen Marsha P. Johnson is largely credited with leading the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which catalyzed the gay right's movement in America. The renaming of the popular park is a small token in the continued acknowledgement of the work and legacy of Johnson and her fellow activists.

In addition to the park's name, Johnson will receive a dedicated monument in Greenwich Village’s Ruth Wittenberg Triangle, which is close to the location of the Stonewall site.
