After finding success with his Manhattan restaurants Red Rooster and Streetbird, Chef Marcus Samuelsson is bringing his signature style to New Jersey in the form of a cozy neighborhood spot called Marcus B&P. Set to open in Newark’s Central Business District, the new restaurant aims to be a casual and accessible spot.
With a nod to Swedish concept of a 'back pocket' (informal) venue, Marcus B&P will make the acclaimed chef's dishes available to a wider audience. As such, the restaurant will serve up some of the chef's signature dishes such as fried chicken and Marcus’ cornbread. However, it will also offer a range of other comfort food options such as house-made pastas and pizzas with New Jersey-inspired toppings.
While the decision to set up shop in Newark may seem like a departure for the star New York City chef, the move is actually part of Samuelsson effort to operate in centers of African-American culture. Indeed, 80% of the restaurants staff will be from Newark, with the rest coming from nearby New Jersey cities.
