Manifold Masses Explores the Contrast of Solid and Void

When it comes to considering structures, the interplay of solid and void is central to architectural composition. Manifold Masses is a project that takes these building blocks and makes a sincere attempt to emphasize the concrete quality of the air that surrounds the voluminous materials.

Harlen Miller and Sontaya Bluangtook entitled their proposal for the Kaohsiung Port Terminal 'Manifold Masses' because of the formal complexity of the areas within and around the project. The designers describe the profound importance of the two principal voids of the interior and the way that the rigid and often fragmenting structural forms embrace them. At one corner and in the center of the station, sharp mirrored facets of the building begin to pixelate and suggest a grand scale disintegration, opening it up to establish a stronger interaction with the outer environment.
