At once adorable and sweet yet gruesome and monstrous, the Lydia Dekker Horrible Sweet sculpture series provokes a confusing mixture of emotions.
Artist Lydia Dekker uses soft, sugary sweet colors in the pastel range, including pale greens, pinks and blues, and gives each of her critters extremely adorable expressions. You almost want to pick them up and cuddle them like you would a small puppy or a baby doll, but the purposefully ugly and contorted features, such as bulbous noses, shriveled limbs and twisted smiles, make you rethink that first instinct. These little sculptures are what I would imagine horrifying monsters and weird aliens probably look like as infants.
