The Love Card from Shen Ming Makes Sightless Grocery Shopping Easier

Designer Shen Ming is attempting to change the way the blind shop for groceries with the Love Card. This misleadingly named device is designed to read aloud the names and prices of food in the store.

The Love Card reads RFID tags to tell blind shoppers the name and price of their item. The Love Card seems like a great concept, but it has a few hurdles to overcome. Food in grocery stores are currently not equipped with RFID tags. This could change over time, but it doesn't seem likely as the grocery stores with the least amount of overhead are the ones that make the most money. In addition to the speaker system, I would also like to see the Love Card communicate items and prices via braille as grocery stores can be incredible noisy during certain times of the day.
