uhü, or the Urban Housing Unit, is a 385-square-foot prefab structure from Live Light, the City of Boston’s Housing Innovation Lab and Boston Society of Architects that is being introduced as a prototype to Boston.
The space may seem small, but it is set up in such a way that creates ample areas for sleeping, living and dining, as well as a fully wheelchair-accessibly bathroom. The compact living space offered by uhü is perfect for a single person, a student or even a senior.
To maximize the amount of space that the individual Urban Housing Units can save, they are stacked into a multi-level sixplex that reminds of an iconic design of Le Corbusier’s l'Unité d'habitation in Marseilles. In effect, these housing units can be "plugged" into a structural steel frame for utmost simplicity.
