MAKE architecture designed 'Little Brick Studio,' a studio space located above a garage in the Abbotsford neighborhood of Melbourne, Australia.
The architects aimed to create a structure that made a positive contribution to the area. The structure interacts with the busy, urban surroundings in front of it, without being overbearing to the smaller residential homes behind. The architects also worked to ensure the building's footprint was minimal, lessening its impact on the house and backyard. The angled roof minimizes the structure's initial tendency to overshadow at the rear and keeps the volume manageable for the small space.
The exterior was inspired by the Abbotsford's nearby brick factories. The finished structure also features a large window and timber door at its lower level, giving it "a sense of entry and address."
