Outdoor Kaleidoscope Art

This Outdoor Mirror Canopy Creates a Playful Light and Shadow Display

This 500 foot-long optical illusion sculpture plays with light and shadow, using reflecting mirrors to create a kaleidoscope-inspired piece of art. It was created by Teresita Fernández and is called 'Fata Morgana.' This sculpture hangs like a canopy overhead in Madison Square Garden.

The shimmering optical illusion artwork combines shadow and light in a playful way that engages passersby and attracts tourists. The structure is made up of mirrored disks that hang like hole-filled tarps above paths, walkways and recreational areas.

Fata Morgana allows sun rays to flicker and dance across the people and landscape of the park in an abstract form. By reflecting the foliage, buildings and skylines in an obscured way, it creates and alternate view of the park and visitors. The art display will be in the park until the winter of 2016.
