LEGO is a ubiquitous feature of contemporary pop culture and to find an example of this, one need not look any further than the 'LEGO Surfer' series by Alberto Seveso.
The photographer recently shot a series that depicts blotches of ink undulating underwater. Many of the forms found in that series resembled ocean waves. Well, what goes better with ocean waves than surfers? However, Seveso, being the inventive photographer that he is, is not this literal-minded. Rather than plunk a Photoshopped beach-boy on to the inky waves, he inserted a LEGO figurine.
The plastic surfer cuts through swirling mounds of blue in some shots and is enveloped in others. There is a definite sense of motion to these photographs. One's mind fills in the blanks of the series and pictures the tiny toy surfer riding the waves of the open ocean.
