There has been a concerted effort the past couple of years by various environmental organizations to convince the public to choose fluorescent lighting as a more efficient alternative to traditional incandescent lights. However, fluorescent tubes have their own issues, especially with regard to their safe disposal since they they contain mercury. The Bikei, a new LED tube lamp developed by Toshin Electric Company, aims to solve both issues.
The new LED lamp is designed to fit in already existing fluorescent tube sockets. The lamps use blue LED elements combined with red and green phosphors to produce white light and use about half the energy of standard fluorescents.
Although they are expected to be relatively high in cost (about US$300), they have a very long life expectancy. According to the Tech-On! website, "its rated life is 40,000 hours, which is 'about five times the life of general fluorescent lamps.'" To put that in perspective, you could leave it on continuously for over four and a half years before it starts to dim!
So regardless of your motives, there will soon be a viable third option when it comes to lighting, especially if they are able to reduce their cost as production ramps up.
