Siberian percussion group Ethnobeat Irkusk have recently created a video that has gone viral, just by drumming on sheets of ice on a frozen Lake Baikal. At a blisteringly icy cold negative 20 Celsius, the ice makes for a most unique-sounding musical instrument for the group of Siberian percussionists. The group allegedly found this site by pure chance. According to the Siberian Times, "[i]n minus 20C, they found by pure chance that the one meter thick ice has a distinctive and haunting rhythm all of its own."
On the experience of drumming on ice, architect Natalya Vlasevskaya says, "[i]t felt like we were playing on the drums that Nature has left out for us, alone under the sun on the frozen waters of the world's most magnificent lake."
