The ‘Kitetender 400’ is a hybrid recreational boat designed for the sport of kitesailing, a sport that marries aspects of sailing and kitesurfing. The boat has a sports kite attached to its core, rather than the typical mast and sail.
In kitesailing, the kite is launched and flown much like in regular kitesurfing, and even has the same safety systems, including a quick release and safety leash.
The boat’s hull is closed and has an open transom (rear), which allows excess water to leave the boat. The open transom makes it easy to enter the boat. It also has a pivoting centerboard and rudder to prevent damage to the vessel in shallow waters.
The first Kitetender prototype was made out of marine plywood, but the inventors hope for the final version will be constructed with fiberglass. It will weigh only 75 kg, making it easy to transport on cars or in small trailers.
