Sensual Sake Branding

Designer Kerissa Voldeck Weaves a Love Story Between Two Beverages

Design student Kerissa Voldeck created the 'Red Thread' sake concept as part of her year-end assignment. The name of the fictional brand comes from Japanese and Chinese folklore. These cultures believe a thin red thread tied to either the ankle (China) or little finger (Japan) unites two people who are destined to be lovers. Out of this simple tale, Voldeck found the inspiration for the packaging of her sake soul mates.

Taking these romantic notions to heart, Kerissa Voldeck created a sake set that unites two distinctly different types of sake: Junmai Nigori, which delivers a sweeter finish, and Ginjo, a stronger variety. Bound by red thread and topped with a scrap of black fabric, the two sakes live in a rectangular lacquered frame. The base of the Ginjo sake bottle has a slot to fit the cap of the Junmai Nigori, so the two can interlock just like two lovers.

Sensual, romantic and traditional, the 'Red Thread' packaging weaves an epic love story between two sakes.
