Kanaga System Krush is an independent and fair trade record label dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional West Africa music. Their intention is to put "money in the pockets of artists and music in the hands of the people."
A quick visit to their website with your speakers on will give you a sample of the upbeat music their artists create. They also have an online store featuring latest releases and sample tracks as well as a clothing line that features shirts for men, women and children. Kanaga System Krush is also working on a documentary to showcase the lifestyle, traditional music and dance of Mali. The trailer can be seen above.
"By bringing this music to the world market, KSK is opening new channels to an old tradition, as well as providing direct support to the carriers of this ancient knowledge," the site says.
The founder, Aja Salvatore, was drawn to the music in West Africa several years ago, and was particularly captivated by the passion Malians had for their music, despite tough living conditions and widespread poverty. Aja found that their music was filled with hope and inspiration, so he began recording their music to share with the rest of the world.
