Jamel Shabazz' "Back in the Day" book features a collection of photographs taken on the streets of New York between 1980 and 1989, the nascent years of hip-hop style. Shabazz is a 30-year veteran of "urban life" photography and looking through highlights from "Back in the Day," it's easy to see why. He has an eye for capturing average people who look like superstars, partially because of their impeccable outfits and partially because of their natural swagger.
My favorite image in Jamel Shabazz' "Back in the Day" collection features three dudes in identical red Nike jackets. Nothing says "we're a crew" like colorful, matching outfits. They exude a natural charisma and confidence evident in all of the snaps, one that makes me long for the sartorial efforts of yesteryear.
