Beacon Airport Navigation

The indoo.rs Indoor Navigation at SFO Helps Blind Travelers Get Around

San Francisco International Airport's beacon technology-based indoor navigation system is intended to guide the blind within the building. Interior mapping company indoo.rs determines the location of blind passengers and offers voice instructions through the user's smartphone.

300 beacons have been placed throughout SFO's Terminal 2 and work similarly to Apple's iBeacon to deliver location-sensitive data. The beacons are placed all over -- including baggage claim, bathrooms, boarding gates, stores and power outlets. The indoo.rs app can use its voiceover feature to let the user know what is in the vicinity or to direct them to a specific place.

The goal of SFO when it comes to indoor navigation is accessibility, with hopes of expanding the technology throughout the airport for anyone to use.
