Olafur Eliasson’s ice art installation gives people the chance to come into contact with pieces from Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier. Although most people don’t come in contact with icebergs on a daily basis, global warming is melting gigantic glaciers, and this installation serves as a sobering reminder of that.
The pieces of ice are kept in a room that keeps them frozen. This would be an incredibly wasteful effort, if the energy for the exhibit was not generated by solar panels installed on the roof of the MoMA PS1 just for this purpose.
‘Your Waste of Time’ seems to communicate the futility of waiting for the chunks of ice to melt, as the energy harvested from the sun is bountiful.
