The Ian Sklarsky NYC Future Zoo piece creates a future zoo for the year 2049. The Brooklyn-based artist Ian Sklarsky will have his work temporarily displayed at the New York hotel YOTEL. Sklarsky uses the entire hotel space to present these hybrid animals, which are a mix of animals, robots and humans. For example, the robot arm zebra takes patrons' baggage.
Each animal is given a different narrative on their plexiglass information sheet. The viewer can learn about what the animals went through from now to 2049 to come into existence. Most stories discuss the use of DNA cloning.
The plexiglass also provides a texturized material, so one can also use sensory touch to feel the animals of the future. The interaction does not stop there by scanning a barcode one can contribute to "cloning" the species.
In the 'Winds of Change' portion, Sklarsky created blind contour portraits of animals that would have become extinct. The viewer is shown the problems of the present and allowed to examine the current world.
