Japanese architect Keiji Ashizawa nods to wooden louvers for influence when creating the concrete Hous in Aoyama. It has the purpose of creating a tranquil sense of privacy as it is nestled in the central Aoyama area. It is home to a family with a child and two dogs. Privacy was a big focus for the clients as it is located on a busy intersection, leading the team to lean to concrete as the building's material.
The founder of the studio, Keiji Ashizawa tells Dezeen, "We had to choose a material resilient to acoustic disruption and vibration for the urban context. Considering the need for a basement, rooftop, and balcony, we picked concrete as the best fit." The entrance is shaded by tall wooden louvers to create a privacy shield. Ashizawa continues, "Louvres create subtle seclusion within the urban setting with a soft ambience, often seen in traditional townhouses in Kyoto. They serve both as a privacy screen and light filter."
