Anti-Homophobic Language Campaigns

Stonewall UK Are Targeting Schools with its New Campaign

The use of homophobic language is an almost daily occurrence in British schools; in order to combat this Stonewall UK—a lesbian, gay and bisexual charity—has created a new campaign directed at British secondary schools.

The three posters created for the campaign prominently display a common gay slur—"that's so gay"—and provides a blunt counter point underneath it in hopes to "challenge misuse of the word gay." They have also created and sent guides for teachers and young people on how they can tackle the issue of homophobic language. The posters and guides have been sent to 25,000 schools across Britain.

Many young people who use the term "gay" aren't necessarily trying to be homophobic or are even aware that it's considered homophobic language, but that doesn't make it any less hurtful for those who identify as homosexuals.
