Modular Childhood Room Furniture

'Home Back Home' Makes Childhood Rooms Suitable for Adults

The Spanish economy is in the doldrums, with 54 percent of Spanish adults between 25 and 40 unemployed, and 'Home Back Home' is a architectural project that focuses on furniture with this unfortunate statistic in mind.

Unemployment means a lack of income, which itself translates to the inability to afford many of the necessities of adulthood, such as an apartment or home. As such, a large portion of young Spanish adults have been forced to move back in with their parents in their childhood homes. The problem is that the rooms that were suitable for children are impractical for adults.

The pieces in Home Back Home, a project by PKMN Architects, are designed to modulate common features of childhood spaces, making them appropriate for adults. These include partitions to close off shared spaces and repurposed IKEA furniture that can extend child-sized pieces.
