Partially Buried Timber Homes

'Höller House' Inhabits the Northernmost Hillside in a Small Town

Höller House stands out from the rest of the homes in the small town of Alberschwende, Austria. Though the home indeed looks different from the average home in that region of the Bregenzerwald valley, its position in the town is what makes it unique. The home is the northernmost building in the entire village, and it's virtually guaranteed to be so forever, as it's built into the base of a steep hillside.

Part of the reason for building Höller House on such an aggressive piece of terrain is practical. One third of the home is buried under the earth, which adds a degree of privacy. It also makes the home's temperature far easier to manage throughout all seasons.
