Online British grocery store Ocado is now experimenting with a driverless grocery car for the purposes of delivering goods in the city.
The self-driving 'CargoPod' is being tested in London, delivering groceries from warehouses straight to the homes of Ocado customers. The car is equipped with sensors, lasers and cameras and boasts a top speed of 25 mph, making it ideal for traveling short distances and carrying small loads. The CargoPod boasts eight individual compartments, which can be securely accessed by a customer. As part of its 10-day trial in London, the CargoPod treated existing Ocado customers to a free goodie pack, demonstrating the ease with which future grocery deliveries may be received with the autonomous delivery truck.
Ocado has noted that it plans to work with Oxbotica to perfect its delivery vehicle and potentially sell the technology to other retailers worldwide.
