General Assembly Renovates the Gowanus Loft in Brooklyn

Local design studio General Assembly has taken on a striped-back approach to the renovation project of the Gowanus Loft. It is defined by its wooden structural elements at the core of the building, which take up a part of the top floor of a converted factory. It was important to the firm that the character of the apartment was retained but brightened up.

The building is in the industrial West Brooklyn neighborhood going through quick regeneration. The design studio shares the process with Dezeen, stating "This loft in a former jute mill was in a state of disrepair when we got our hands on it. Our approach was to combine many of the original elements with modern touches to create a space with a clean, contemporary, yet raw feeling."
