Rodney Smith Jr. and friend Terrence Stroy recently launched a free lawn care service for those who are unable to cut their own grass. While the two Alabama A&M students started off with the goal of mowing just 40 lawns for free, the project has now expanded into a long-term initiative.
The idea for the free lawn care service came about after Smith and Story witnesses an older man struggling to mow his lawn. Now the two students mow the lawns of the elderly, the disabled and single mothers as a way to give back to the community. The students have even begun recruiting volunteers to help with the project. Each volunteer sports a different colored shirt indicating how many lawns he or she has mowed, with black shirts reserved for those who reach the 50-lawn milestone.
The initiative demonstrates the power of community projects and how they can expand into something much greater.
