If you've ever had fantasies of staying in an old-fashioned manor with character and a colorful history, make sure to check out the new Fontevraud L'Hôtel. Located in the Loire Valley in France, the Fontevraud L'Hôtel takes refuge in a remodeled monastic site from the Middle Ages. The stunning outcome is the work of Abbey Director David Martin and designer Patrick Jouin from creative firm Jouin Manku.
Built in 1101, the monastery was later converted into a prison in the early 19th century by Napoleon -- the Abbey stayed as a prison and hospital up until 1963. Since then, restorations have been underway on this historical gem and it has finally transformed to what it is today: a luxurious hotel with a whimsical touch of the past.
"Between parchment and touch screens, we have written a new page, opened a new historical period, one where we can experience a vibrant living heritage," says Martin.
