Flohr Design creates furniture that has an organic aesthetic, which speaks to its eco-friendly existence. Intriguingly enough, Flohr Design doesn't use typical environmentally sound materials such as bamboo. Instead, they have been crafted out of Sakhalin knotweed. Christian Reder, the founder of the furniture design studio, was inspired to use this material when he grew too much in his backyard. Not wanting to burn away the access that he had to cut away, he decided to make furniture with it. It helped that Sakhalin knotweed is very light and just as strong.
Based in Bergrade, Germany, Flohr Design has tweaked the knotweed by embedding the shoots with a mixture of cold glue and wood flour. The result is a perforated texture and pattern that makes the chairs, lights and more stand out.
