The first responder app alerts first responders of emergencies occurring in nearby areas.
When cardiac arrest occurs, a person's chance of survival decreases by 10 percent for every passing minute, resulting in brain damage that can ensue after just four minutes. The app, developed by the European Heart Rhythm Association aims to combat lengthy and sometimes life-altering paramedic wait times by enlisting civilians trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and getting them to the scene quicker than emergency services.
People trained in CPR can register in the app -- when a 9/11 call is placed regarding a cardiac arrest, police dispatchers can send an alert through the app, notifying registered civilians of the location of the emergency.
In a trial run in Germany, the app recruited 600 volunteers who arrived quicker than emergency services 36% of the time. This life-saving app aims to connect people in states of distress with people who have the necessary skills to save their lives.
