With many opting to create their own face mask designs due to the shortages in personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, one college student in Versailles took the opportunity to devise a solution that aims to benefit those who are hard of hearing or deaf.
As most face masks completely cover the mouth, those who are hearing impaired can have difficulty deciphering words and different facial expressions. With this in mind, Ashley Lawrence created a series of face masks that feature a clear plastic window over the mouth, allowing wearers to protect themselves without causing as much obstruction. In addition to these masks, Lawrence has been busy coming up with designs that can be used by those who reply on hearing aids and can't use masks that have strings over the ears.
To fund her mask designs and increase production, Lawrence launched a GoFundMe initiative, where she quickly met her goal.
