Commissioned by the City Archives and the The Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, Erik Klein Wolterink created these kitchen portraits. The Dutch photographer Erik Klein Wolterink opens every cupboard, drawer, fridge and oven to capture every detail displaying the lives of Netherlands' citizens. After taking photographs of each kitchen piece separately, Klein Wolterink then reunites the images into one unit to create a sharper view of the kitchen's interiors because there are multiple little surprises to discover.
Each of the images captures how the kitchen represents so much more than a space to make food. The website 'This Is Paper' describes the diversity of each kitchen saying, "a packet of Korma curry of Pakistani descent and cardamom pods try to square themselves with Dutch kitchen habits." Erik Klein Wolterink displays the open attitude to these cultural norms as he captures the diversity of the modern-day kitchen in The Netherlands.
