The Eliodomestico is unique not only for its innovative, logic-defying design, but because it may indeed help alleviate conflicts and social pressure associated with Earth's dwindling supply of clean water.
The rising price and rarity of available, fresh water is said to threaten global stability by 2030, according to most UN and independent reports -- indeed, H20 scarcity has already fuelled violent skirmished between East African pastoralists. But Milan-based designer Gabriele Diamanti hopes to avoid such violence with the help of the Eliodomestico, a solar-powered purifier whose form factor ensures that it receives the maximum amount of sunlight possible, regardless of the time. Eight hours later and the water will have produced enough steam to extract the non-potable elements from the water. The result: 5 liters of fresh, drinkable liquid. What's more, Diamanti built the purifier under a Creative Commons license, in the hopes that communities can build themselves one without paying hefty fees for licensing or ownership!
