Scientists at Rothamsted Research are experimenting with special diets in order to develop the country's first eco-friendly cows. Due to the unique way that cows digest and process their food, cattle farming is responsible for a significant amount of greenhouse gases. In order to reduce the carbon footprint of cattle farms, scientists are performing a series of innovative experiments to curb the production of harmful gases.
As part of the experiment, the researchers have selected 90 cows from a farm in Devon, England. These 90 cows are then separated into three different groups and each fed a different diet. The scientists will then closely monitor the size of the animals, their activity and their environmental conditions. In order to determine exactly how much methane and nitrous oxides the eco-friendly cows are producing, the researchers are relying on specially-fitted gas analysts.
The goal of the project is to reduce the amount of harmful gas emitted by cows and to prove that there is a more sustainable way of raising cattle.
