Next-Gen Hair Dryers

Hair Stylist Matthew Collins Trials the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

Dyson is a leader when it comes to vacuums, hand dryers, fans and purifiers, and now the company is set to conquer an entirely new category—personal care—with the launch of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. The Supersonic hair dryer is a natural progression for Dyson, since it borrows some of the same great technology that powers its other innovative products. The V9 motor is Dyson's lightest and most advanced digital motor to date, which is also small enough to fit into the handle of the blow dryer, rather than the head. As this design is engineered for balance, the Supersonic sets a new standard for hair dryers as the first of its kind. From a professional standpoint, the lightweight design of the unit reduces strain, which is extremely important for preventing injuries for those who work with their hands all day. Consumers will be able to enjoy this feature and more when styling hair at home with the Dyson Supersonic.

Although hot air comes out of the device, the magnetic attachments remain cool to the touch with HeatShield technology. The device also features intelligent heat control to regulate temperature. The hair dryer has four heat settings that include controls to adjust airflow and temperature, as well as a system to remind users when to clear the filter.

In order to see all of the innovative features of the hair dryer at work, Trend Hunter got an exclusive invitation to the Brennen Demelo Studio in downtown Toronto for a demonstration by co-owner and hair stylist Matthew Collins. Collins recreated some of the most popular hairstyles of the moment, using the styling concentrator, smoothing nozzle and diffuser attachments to sculpt slick ponytails, ribboned buns and effortless "French girl" waves—Collins notes that this is one of the most Googled looks of the season.

Over the four years the Dyson Supersonic was in development, 600 prototypes were created. Now, hundreds of patents for the finished model and its attachments are pending, as it is expected to set a new precedent for the future of hair dryers.
