Drew Anthony Smith's new photo series is a tribute to New York. The project features abandoned umbrellas that he found on the streets of New York. His subjects are a cheap staple of the city's residents used to surviving the constantly changing weather and sold in every subway station.
Due to the nature of the city's weather, these cheap black umbrellas are almost instantly transformed into contorted, strange shapes and are often discarded.
"When I moved to Brooklyn from Austin, Texas, I immediately became obsessed with New York City's discarded umbrellas," says the artist. He would notice how after any storm the city would become littered with the mashed up umbrellas. Smith saw the beauty in the trash; he saw the mangled umbrellas as weather-made sculptures.
