Cartoon-Creating Cameras

The 'Draw This' Camera Creates Unpredictable Art with AI

Cameras generally try to capture life as realistically as possible, but the Draw This camera instead turns real life into crudely drawn cartoons. Designed by Dan Mcnish, this interesting camera utilizes a neural network in order to translate photos into hand-drawn cartoons often found in elementary school notebooks.

To create this effect, the Draw This camera leverages the millions of doodles pulled from Google's Quick, Draw! game data. These images were then run through an image processor that was able to recognize and categorize the game data with a picture that is taken. The entire system is run off a Raspberry Pi system and prints images through a thermal printer.

The results may not always be accurate—a plant can sometimes be interpreted as a wine glass—but that is part of the fun of the Draw This camera. The ultimate goal of the project was not to create an accurate AI system but to leverage artificial intelligence to produce unpredictable art.
