The Worldart artist Karlien de Villiers brings a series of creative comic classics that is somewhat hilarious, but at the same time quite melancholic through her ‘The Discomfort Zone’ art exhibition. Known as a comic book artist, this is her third solo exhibition featuring paintings.
This artworks highlight De Villier’s fascination with our own inability to find comfort in the moment and in the people we share our lives with. This hilarious combination of humor and pain makes de Villier’s artwork super unique. In a similar vein, De Villiers’s latest body of work explores the values and moral ambiguities of suburbia. Despite the seeming simplicity of the subject matter and the straightforward lines, these works suggest the human and his or her social existence to be anything but effortless.
Promiscuous wives, flaccid men, doomed affairs, devastated lovers, traumatized husbands and lonely spouses abound in these images. While a pervading sense of melancholy set the scene for these disastrous scenarios, de Villiers’s work is saturated with humor, suggesting an emotional landscape that is never as clear or stable as we imagine it to be in real life.
The artwork will be on show at the Worldart gallery till 30 November 2013. Be inspired to get one of this melancholic humor art on your bedroom or living room wall from the www.worldart.co.za website.
