Child-Administered Makeup

The #DaughterDoesMyMakeupSeries Has Some Fun

Elly Heise's #DaughterDoesMyMakeup series reminds us that we don't give children enough credit.

The little girls throw conventional makeup by the wayside, applying lipstick, eyeshadow and blush with such reckless abandon, you can't help but admire it. When was the last time you applied your makeup with such fearlessness? Such creativity? That's what I thought.

Beyond the humorous element of looking at turquoise eyeshadow bravely paired with hot pink lipstick, there is a darker side to the series. Heise photographed the mothers looking downright serious in their vaguely clownish makeup. Are their somber expressions meant to signal the exhaustion and difficulty of motherhood? Or are the makeup looks meant to resemble bruising, adding an even more ominous layer of potential domestic violence into the viewer's interpretation.
