With advances in technology and the era of 3D printing comes a collection of customizable fashion garments and accessories.
For 15 years, London-based fashion designer Catherine Wales has worked for distinguished fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jasper Conran and Emanuel Ungaro. Inspired by the visual formation of human chromosomes, the designer has a new conception. Her new three-dimensional collection, Project DNA, combines high fashion, science and technology, pushing the boundaries of fashion and challenging the conventional construction of clothing. The eight-piece collection includes a shoulder adornment made out of 3D feathers, a scaffold corset and several headpieces that conceal central areas of the face.
Wales perceives the wardrobe as an interchangeable set of building blocks. The traditional corset, for instance, is restrictive in that it is meant to narrow the waist while enhancing the bust. By providing people with an opportunity to customize their own clothing, this allows them to display a body image that they desire, rather than one imposed on them by the fashion industry.
