Showing the viewer what life would be like living in a desolate wasteland surrounded by polluted waters and dying lands, photographer Rena Effendi’s 'Liquid Land' cultural photography series captures the life of those living in the polluted lands of the Absheron Peninsula in Azerbaijan.
The Cairo-based photographer is an award-winning photographer for her significant cultural photography series, and her 'Liquid Land' series just goes to prove how good the photographer is at capturing the essence of the issue she is photographing.
Being from Azerbaijan herself, Effendi feels strongly about these communities that are "pushed to the edges of city and society, they inhabit makeshift homes, oilfields and abandoned factories; their numbers grow, with new children born daily."
The moving series of portraits shows the viewers a life in haunted, polluted lands, where people chosoe to survive in these lush-barren lands amidst industrial pollution remains.
