Work-Based Catering Academies

Create Foundation Works with Marginalized Communities

A self-proclaimed "for more than profit company," Create Foundation is an innovative social enterprise that operates catering services and helps to support marginalized communities. The UK-based organization, which works in Liverpool, Leeds, Doncaster and Sunderland, brings together people and food in an effort to tackle social and economic problems in their communities.

Create Foundation, a registered Community Interest Company, has an Academy that creates entry-level jobs and accredited training services for those in need. "Before there was no point in getting up. Now I get up every day and I’m always at work when I should be. The Academy is brilliant; it’s changed my life," said Dave, someone who went through the award-winning program.

Since its launch in 2007, Create Foundation has grown a great deal. In 2008, they opened two cafés and in 2009, they opened Found by Create in St. John's Centre which features work by local fashion designers as well as vintage apparel. What's more, a big accomplishment was the addition of Paul Berriman and Richard Allen as chefs in 2011. The newest innovations coming out of Create Foundation include a restaurant in Leeds and a production kitchen in Create North East.

As one of the first businesses to get the Social Enterprise Mark, it's no surprise that Create Foundation has received recognition from people in high places. Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, said amazing things about the social enterprise: "Create’s dedication and innovative approach makes a real difference to the people of Leeds and they are a proud example of the Big Society I want to see across the UK."
