Even though a charity fundraiser and a craft beer event might seem like an unusual combination, drinking and donations go hand in hand pretty regularly. Staten Island recently held their first big craft beer event of 2015 to raise money for Autism Speaks.
At the end of January, the second annual Brew for Autism was hosted by local beer clubs Pour Standards and Richmond County Beer Club. Attendees sampled 40 different beer varieties as well as chef-prepared food. Featured beverages included a "citrus and passion fruit" IPA, McKenzie Rye Whiskey barrel-aged Imperial Stout and award-winning Coconut Cream Ale from West Brighton resident Patrick Wade.
To support Autism Speaks, Brew for Autism held a raffle and offered giveaways. Proceeds also went to the not-for-profit organization. Craft beer event organizer Sean Torres explains "As the number of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise in Staten Island, so does the need for support."
