Toronto-based architecture firm BORTOLOTTO designed a contemporary home in King City, Canada. The rural community is filled with homes dating back to the 1960s. This new house occupies the footprint of a previous home; however, it has been updated to a more modern design. The architects organized the building to be "dramatically horizontal," offering its inhabitants abundant light and protective shelter.
The sloping facade, which is clad in triple layered slate, connects with the driveway to create a smooth transition between home and property. Meanwhile, in the back, a glazed facade offers views of a beautiful forest and ravine. Inside, crisp white interiors are complemented by materials such as marble, stone, glass and wood for a neutral color scheme.
The house is completed by efficient features such as radiant flooring, ground source heating and photovoltaic technologies.
