Historic Coastal Hotel Redesigns

Matthew Goodwin Gave This Hotel a Beach-Inspired Upgrade

Previously a "run-down motor lodge" and now a beautiful homey coastal hotel, 'The Surfrider' in California is the epitome of West Coast hospitality. Redesigned by architect/hotelier Matthew Goodwin and his creative director wife Emma Crowther and business partner Alessandro Zampedri, the building was first erected in 1953 and has a lengthy history, tying it to influential musical figures like The Doors, Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac.

The interior of the coastal hotel communicates the beachy vibe of its location in Malibu with bright spaces, natural light, fresh decor and a guest-only rooftop bar. Matthew and Emma ensured that the rooms met the aesthetic of the West Coast with "textured rugs and wicker lampshades," as well as lengthy hammocks.

Without a doubt, the Surfrider coastal hotel allows its guests to enjoy California and the beach to the fullest capacity.
