The Burned Stools Demonstrate How Strategic Igniting Makes Intriguing Design

The scorched shapes that the Burned Stools reveal the combined signature of the designer and of fire. Artificial and organic forces have united to create seating objects with discernible qualities, both man-made and natural.

Galia Tammuz experimented with tree trunk segments, sawing them in certain ways and setting them alight. The designer would likely have exerted less of her own energy in the cutting of the blocks and bark-covered stumps, trusting that the flames would be successful in removing quite a bit of material. Cross-shaped excisions are made in the bases of the Burned Stools, separating them into four sections. These become the legs of the seats as the controlled blaze drives deeper into the wood.
