Boris ‘Enlightenment Series' Explores Religion

Recently at the world’s biggest design exhibition Boris unveiled their newest design collection ‘The Enlightenment Series’ by Boris. The ‘Enlightenment Series’ is compromised of four pieces including a Rosary Lamp, Confession Box, Omikuji Carpet, and Seven Pieces Mirror. This Hong Kong-based company, which started in 2009, has "developed a unique style of work blending design, sustainability and technology."

Katarina Ivarsson and Anna Karlsson, founders of Boris, have instilled in their designs various religious and spiritual connotations. Ivarsson and Karlsson created this series in light of the numerous beliefs and religions currently practiced. Their religion and what they personally believe in is sustainability. For each piece in the series, close attention was paid to its sustainability; through either "efficient consumption during production or proper selection of materials."

The spiritual side of ‘The Enlightenment Series’ is apparent in the numerous connotations and integrations of religious articles in certain pieces. Some notable examples are the Rosary Lamp a hang-able lamps which uses a rosary as its lanky base.  There is also the Seven Piece Mirror that gets its spirituality from the number rather than the actual object. According to Christianity, there are seven days of creation, for Buddhism there are seven Chakras and of course there is the universal understanding of seven years of bad luck for breaking a mirror. This collection represents an intriguing take on furniture that combines religion, technology, spirituality and sustainability into practical furnishing pieces.
