'BMW Digital Key' is a new option for the BMW X5 SUV or the 8 Series Coupe that gives drivers the chance to use an NFC-enabled phone in place of a physical key to unlock, lock and start the engine. For the sake of convenience, drivers will be able to share their digital key with up to five other authorized users.
To make the most of this system, drivers with a compatible NFC smartphone will be able to opt-in for "comfort access" within the BMW Connected app and their Connected Drive account.
For situations where it would be inconvenient to surrender one's smartphone to a stranger—such as having one's car parked by a valet or serviced by a technician—BMW provides a contactless card that allows the car to be operated.
