The 'Black Pearl Studio' is the brainchild of Studio Rolf.fr and Zecc Architecten. The Rotterdam townhouse was formerly an abandoned apartment block; it's going through yet another overhaul as part of an initiative to resuscitate impoverished neighborhoods.
The house follows a unique floor plan, including a ground floor workshop, a rooftop greenhouse complete with a hot tub and living quarters situated in the two floors in between. The space takes on a "distressed" look, with exposed brick and stripped away floors. Studio Rolf.fr also provided purposefully distressed furniture, such as sliced-up cabinets and bandage-wrapped chairs. The end result is an elegantly disheveled, rustic abode, which garnered the architects an award from Lensvelt furniture brand for the best interior of the year in the Netherlands.
