As to their inspiration, Male and Soekawa write, "We were two single women in our 20s, living in post-recession Brooklyn. So, life was just like all the TV shows would have you imagine: We drank a lot of cheap beer, complained about our jobs, and went on a lot of bad dates. A lot of bad dates."
